What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-informed approach to supporting people whose behaviours of concern are getting in the way of a good life. Rather than focusing on the behaviour alone, PBS starts with a simple question: what is this behaviour telling us?

A behaviour support practitioner works with the participant and the people around them to understand the reasons behind behaviours of concern, then builds a behaviour support plan with practical, positive strategies. The goal is always the same: improve quality of life, build skills, and reduce and eliminate the use of restrictive practices.

Who is it for?

Behaviour support is for NDIS participants of any age whose behaviour is impacting their safety, relationships, learning or independence. That might look like aggression, self-injury, property damage, absconding or withdrawal. It is also for the families, carers, teachers and support workers who want consistent, respectful strategies that actually work day to day.

Our approach at Bloom Care

We are a small Brisbane provider, and that is deliberate. You will work with a consistent practitioner who takes the time to know the participant, their environment and their goals. We collaborate closely with support coordinators, therapists, schools and support workers so the plan is used, not filed away.

Frequently asked questions

What is a behaviour support plan?
A behaviour support plan is a document developed by a behaviour support practitioner that describes a person's behaviours of concern, the reasons behind them, and the positive strategies that will be used to support the person. If any restrictive practices are involved, the plan also sets out how these will be reduced and eliminated over time.
How is Positive Behaviour Support funded in my NDIS plan?
Behaviour support is typically funded under Capacity Building, in the category often called Improved Relationships. Your plan may include funding for a behaviour assessment, plan development and training for the people who support you. If you are not sure what your plan covers, we are happy to help you read it.
Do you support children as well as adults?
Yes. We support NDIS participants across age groups, and we work alongside families, schools and other therapists so that strategies are consistent at home, at school and in the community.
What areas do you service?
We deliver behaviour support across Brisbane, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, Logan, the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast. Appointments can take place at home, in the community or at another location that suits the participant.
What is the difference between PBS and other behaviour approaches?
Positive Behaviour Support focuses on understanding the purpose a behaviour serves and improving the person's whole quality of life, rather than simply reacting to the behaviour. It is respectful, person-centred and evidence-informed, and it is the framework the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission expects providers to use.
How quickly can we get started?
Contact us and we will let you know our current availability. We are a small provider and we keep our caseloads manageable, so participants get a consistent practitioner rather than a rotating roster.
